There is a lively and friendly group of local ringers, ranging in age from 10 to the mid-80s and including some families. They are helped and encouraged by experienced ringers from across the county.

The bells (and the band) have quickly achieved a national reputation in campanology and, because the Alnwick area is a popular holiday destination, we are regularly joined by visiting ringers from many of the other 6,000 UK bell towers. (Conversely, Alnwick ringers, once trained, also visit and ring at other towers very regularly).

The medieval tower of St. Michael’s contains a fine peal of 10 bells installed by Whites of Appleton during the restoration of the tower in 2021. The peal comprises 6 recycled bells from the church of St. James, Newton (near Corbridge in the Tyne valley) and 4 new bells cast by Taylors of Loughborough.

St Michael’s bells are not heavy, they are very well-tuned and very easy to ring which is ideal for tuition. The tower louvres are heavily blocked off to reduce any noise impact on the adjacent neighbours. The louvres are opened for services and special ringing.

Sunday ringing, chiefly with local ringers, follows the 10am service at approximately 11.05 Visitors are welcome.
The main practices are on Wednesdays, 3-5pm, 6.30-8pm, 8-9pm. These begin with rounds and simple methods and become progressively more demanding throughout the evening.
Saturday practice at 3pm is principally tuition for school children.
Visitors are always made welcome but pre-notification is appreciated.
