Whether you are exploring baptism for your child or for yourself, we are delighted to walk this journey with you. Baptism is a joyful moment of welcome into the Christian faith and into the life of our church family.
What is baptism?
Baptism (also called a Christening) is a symbol of God’s love and a sign of belonging to the Christian family. In baptism, we give thanks for gift of new life, speak promises of faith and nurture, and celebrate what it means to become part of the Church worldwide. It marks the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith, supported by the love and prayers of the church community.
Who can be baptised?
Everyone is welcome. Baptism is open to people of all ages: babies, children, teenagers, and adults. You don’t need to have been a regular churchgoer, and there is no charge for a baptism service.
When do baptisms happen?
At St Michael’s, baptisms usually take place:
- During our main Sunday service, so the whole congregation can welcome and pray for you.
- Or at a dedicated baptism service. These take place at 2.30pm on Sunday afternoons (depending on availability), offering a more intimate setting for family and friends.
We’ll work with you to find a date that suits your family.
Preparing for baptism
Once you’ve contacted us, we’ll arrange a friendly meeting with one of our clergy. This is a chance to:
- Explore the meaning of baptism
- Talk through the service
- Ask any questions
- Reflect on the promises you’ll be making
Godparents
Godparents play a special role in supporting the person being baptised. For children, we usually suggest three godparents: traditionally two of the same sex and one of the opposite. They should be baptised themselves and be willing to encourage the child in their faith journey.
What happens during the service?
The baptism service includes:
- Welcoming words and prayers
- Promises made by parents, godparents, or the candidate
- The sign of the cross
- Baptism with water at the font
- A candle lit from the Easter candle, symbolising the light of Christ
It’s a beautiful and meaningful occasion, and we encourage you to invite family and friends to celebrate with you.
After the baptism
Baptism is just the beginning. We’d love to stay in touch with you and support you and your child as they grow in faith. You’ll be invited to:
- Join us for family-friendly services and events
- Explore confirmation when the time feels right
- Be part of our church community in whatever way suits you
